May 2010 As the 2010 Sheriff’s Benefit Rodeo quickly approaches, it seems that I get to say once again that thanks to all of you, 2009 was our most successful event to date! The weather was great and over 15,000 people attended three days of the most professional rodeo performances in Southern California. The Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts showed up in greater numbers than we’ve seen yet, and had a great time at the Camporee and the special rodeo on Saturday morning. We are again planning the special rodeo performance for the scouts on Saturday morning. This was the fifth year for the Challenged Children’s Rodeo to be a part of the show. More cowboys & cowgirls came out to help, and Sheriff Hoops presented award buckles to all the contestants. The Rodeo Committee decided to sponsor them again for their entire season this year so they could present their show at the 10 – 11 rodeos they go to each year without the worry of having to find a sponsor for each, or having the money come out of their own pocket. And, once again, they will be a part of our 2010 rodeo before Saturday and Sunday’s shows. I’m confident, because of your continued support, we will be able to provide the annual sponsorship for this great group of kids and volunteers this year. For Saturday, September 25th, we will be asking, “Are you Tough Enough to Wear Pink?” Wear pink this night to the rodeo and show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness. The rodeo will be making a donation to Loma Linda University Hospital for breast cancer research. We’ve accomplished much since last year. We’re continuing to develop the grounds and have added new pens and made other improvements to the site (despite the heavy rain and strong winds). Permanent bleachers are still a struggle, but we’re making progress. We topped over $80,000 in cash & other support for the scouting organizations this year, and dramatically increased our cash and support to other organizations that are dedicated to helping our children develop into responsible citizens. These include, not only, the Challenged Children’s Rodeo and the 4H Club, but the Yucaipa Equestrian Center, the California State Horsemen’s Association, East Valley Second Chance, and several service clubs. The Rodeo Committee welcomed Cal Poly University for their annual collegiate rodeo in March at the rodeo grounds. Some of the top college rodeo athletes in the country competed in this event, which is the highlight of the California Inter-Collegiate Rodeo Circuit each year. The Rodeo Committee has been hard at work since right after the show to make 2010 even better. Thursday evening, September 23rd has been set aside for the Kick-off barbecue. This night gives the Rodeo Committee the opportunity to honor all of you who have been so instrumental in making this the Premier Professional PRCA Rodeo in Southern California. We’re getting bigger and better with each year and your support has provided us this opportunity. You have our heartfelt thanks for what you’ve helped us accomplish, and we count on your continued support to help us in our venture to touch the lives of children. Mark September 24th, 25th and 26th on your calendars for this year’s Sheriff’s PRCA Rodeo to benefit the children of San Bernardino County. The Friday and Saturday shows are still at 8 pm, and the Sunday show kicks off 5 pm. Thanks for all you’ve done and continue to do; you have my personal respect and gratitude. I look forward to seeing and working with you all again this year. Dave Sharp, Director |
